What is Information Design?

I have thought a lot about which area of information design interests me the most.  I think I would like to work with the information that appears in magazines and such.  I would really enjoy working on the layouts of popular magazines and fitting the articles, and information in at the best places were the reader will be most likely to pause and read it.  I would like to design billboards and advertisements things where I really have a chance to reach people and get a message across.  You never know who is going to see what and maybe something that I design would have a profound impact on someones life.  Maybe they are going through something or need information on something and the ad they saw on the side of a bus, or billboard they drive by everyday, or their favorite magazine will have the article, or advertise the answer they are looking for or even a piece of advice for them to take and run with.  I know that I will never know if this actually happens but it’s the thought of knowing that everyday that I put something out there it could happen that makes it all worth it. But I guess this is all avoiding the point of the question.  So to me information design is finding the best way to arrange the information you are given so that the point you are trying to get out there gets across in the correct way to the correct people. Like I said before it is about impacting someone and hopefully making a difference.
